I newly went on a laptop purchasing rampage and ended up with the Dell Studio 14z, HP dm3z L625 + Radeon 4330, and the Asus UL80VT A1 in ownership all now. The 1st part of this review will concentrate Exclusively on the Asus UL80VT A1 and the second part of this review will compare it with my experience with the Dell Studio 14z and the HP dm3z.

ASUS UL80VT A1 in depth REVIEW

First and primary, let me say that I ordered the UL80VT A1 because I thought it was simply an awesome idea to have switchable graphics in a laptop because you get excellent battery life + excellent performance when needed. There were no reviews of the UL80VT out when I bought it, so I bought the UL80VT A1 from ., which has a 100 refund on purchases just in case things did not work out with me and the new lady.

While I waited to recieve the laptop in the mail, I read a review over at .. Oh boy, was I disappointed considering all the bad things the reviewer had to say about it i.E. Bad keyboard, bad track pad, awful build quality, poor gaming performance. Needless to I had second thoughts about opening up the Asus UL80VT A1 because I did not think it was worth my time considering the all the problems the reviewer had with his review model.

So that morning I got my HP dm3z in the mail and was really excited about how very beautiful the laptop was. It’s certainly sexier in my opinion than every other ultraportable out there, as well as the Macbook Pro 13″ and HP Envy 13. I will get to the dm3z a little afterward. Either way, my 1st impression led me to believe that I’d most likely be keeping the dm3z and just returning the Asus. When the Asus came in the mail, I was not watching for it like I had been the dm3z. But I did take it upstairs and opened it up. Unboxing video coming soon.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

My 1st impression astoundedly contradictory to review I had read. I picked it up, squeezed it, pushed on the keyboard, which had minimal flex that was not obvious to me when typing. My other 1st impressions were just how well the trackpad worked. The two finger scroll worked flawlessly though it is not as smooth of a scroll as Apple’s, it functions equally responsively and is just as useful.

GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE ranking 9/10

Over the last view days, I have been taking the UL80VT A1 out for turn in a series of gaming tests. The 1st game I tested was the ever liked Counter Strike: Source. I has been astounded by the computer’s capability to put out 150 FPS in the stress test at native resolution of 1366×768. I had been expecting to get closer to 80 100 FPS. I then tested it with 4x AA on, and it resulted in 99 FPS, which is phenomenal considering that AA typically cripple weaker graphics cards like the Nvidia 210M.

I was keen to test out the UL80VT’s performance in many of the new games due to last review I had read that had denounced its capability to play modern games. I had newly bought Batman: Arkham Asylum. I loaded it up with the default settings, which were set on High at native 1366×768 resolution. Game play was moderately smooth and playable, but it was noticably choppy at times with those settings 26 FPS average in the video stress test, so I dropped the settings down to medium. This time the Asus got 40 FPS average in the video stress test, and the game play was perfectly playable and smooth.

I then downloaded Team Fortress 2. It was recognized to give ultraportable gaming machines a tough time caused by its high shader prerequisites. When playing, I averaged about 50 60 FPS at native resolution with everything on High with no AA. I noticed drops down to 30 FPS when in heavy action, but it wasn’t too disruptive to game play. I do not think it went below 30 FPS throughout the time I played.

After hearing claims that Asus UL80VT couldn’t run Need For Speed: Shift well. I downloaded the demo to see if these claims were true. Luckily, they weren’t. I was able to accomplish playable frame rates, though it was a little choopy with the default settings, which had the screen at 1024×768 resolution and everything else up in detail. I tried changing the settings, but after changing the settings to reduce the resolution to 800×600, the game frequently gave me an error and crashed right as the race was about to start. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do a formal test, but it was clear that the game was to get at least 30 FPS at 800×600 resolution with texture settings on High. I could expect the game to be playable as long as you’re content with 800×600 or maybe somewhat better res and medium settings.

I also managed to squeeze in a little play time in Protoype, another recent game that has been released earlier this year. It played smoothly at the default 1280×720 which was the max res for many reason and on the default medium settings.

Another game I was able to attempt was Call of Duty: World at War, which has same specifications to the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. People will be happy to know that I was able to accomplish 35 40 FPS constant at native resolution 1366×768 with texture settings on “normal” except for “shader settings” which I set to “low”. I also turned off all of the extra graphical features, which did not make most of a difference in visuals anyway.

In conclusion about the gaming peformance of this ultraportable laptop, it has excellent performance and handles most modern games fluidly at native resolution.

BATTERY LIFE ranking 10/10

Yesterday, I used the laptop for three hours early in the morning with wifi on and light up. Afterward that day, I used it for about 15 minutes running Batman: AA. I then used it about seven hours more with light at about 20 2.5 hours with wifi on and 4.5 with it off. In total the laptop lasted me 10.25 hours between a mixture of wifi, gaming, and note taking/paper writing. I was very happy to get this excellent of performance out of it. This was exactly what I looked for by battery life.

BUILD QUALITY ranking 6/10

My initial impression was that the build quality was just average not great, but nothing bad about it either, but now after having it for a couple days, I now agree with Charles’ review about many of the issues with build quality. Yesterday morning when I typed, I noticed that when I pressed down on the front edge of the left palm rest it squeaked annoyingly it had not pressed down on this part of the laptop when it was on a hard surface still because it had generally been on my laptop up till this point.

I began squeezing the front edge and noticed that top part of the chassis is not cemented to the bottom part of the chassis well so that when you put pressure on it such as when you rest your palm on it it made a sound. I tried putting about an inch long part of scotch tape across the part that sqeaked, and the squeaking went away totally. It disappointed to find this because it was the 1st issue with the build quality. As well, I now understand what Charles meant when he said that when he pressed in the center of the laptop it causes the bottom of the laptop to touch the surface it’s resting on.

It’s not if you press in the center of the keyboard like I had thought Charles had said my bad!!. It is if you press on the trackpad buttons like Charles had really said, he was right that you may feel the laptop touch the surface it’s resting on, but the thing Charles was wrong about is that it is not the bottom of the laptop touching the surface below it. It is a little “support peg/foot” that protrudes from the bottom of the laptop about 1/10″ of an inch.

The in general chassis does flex a tad, but it’s just the peg touching, and the peg is maybe moving 1/16″ of an inch tops probably less. So yes, the chassis does flex just a hair, but not as bad as the review makes it sound I think the review should be updated with this info personally.

I am thinking about put a drop of super glue on the edge of the left palm rest to keep it from squeaking. I am pretty sure it could work without a hitch unless you put too much glue , then tried to take the casing separately and was not able to. I figure it would not void the one year accidental warranty but maybe the two year standard warranty if they figured out what I did. I am not sure though. I figure you may be able to generally “cut through” the glue so that the chassis may be opened if you required to send it in for repairs.

I also noticed that the complete surface including the aluminum top acquires fingerprints. I has been disappointed that the aluminum top also was prone to oils from my fingers.

HEAT MANAGEMENT ranking 10/10

The heat on this bad boy is hardly obvious. I think more heat is generated because it’s restricting the airflow over your lap more than anything. Whenever my lap started to feel a little warm, I could feel the bottom of the laptop but the bottom of the laptop never got hot. It was generally just the fact that my legs were not to get as much air to cool them down.

I was able to play Batman:AA while on my lap just good, though it started to be mildly uneasy by the time 30 mins rolled around. Still, as far as gaming on the lap goes, I think it could be doable, and far more doable than on any other laptop I have ever tried.

This laptop is by far the coolest running laptop I have ever owned I’ve owned about 14 different laptops.. For this reason, I give it a 10/10 in heat management.

I do not typically use up my time putting in reviews because it does not benefit me much I know, kind of selfish but this product was just too good to not leave a review, particularly since there is no review here still.

I’ve been looking at laptops for many years now, generally looking for the one that hits all the sweet spot. I did not NEED it so I was able to just keep waiting for the right one. Here were all the things I looked for.

Fast speed For gaming like World of Warcraaft, etc.

Long battery life it is not mobile if you are shackled to power cord.

Decent price Nobody should be paying more than a great for a laptop.

Temperature This is something many people do not think much about till late. Laptops get HOT, , then they are not LAPtop, but a DESKtop.

DVD drive Because I like to keep my alternatives open.

Every laptops I have seen through deal sites, etc NEVER met all of these requirements. Till now. This computer really is THE laptop to get now.

Pros

Great speed I just ran World of Warcraft and it runs SMOOTH with mid high setting. I also saw from another review that this can run Farcry2 or Crysis2 at 40fps which is pretty damn good.

LED screen This takes many to get used to since I am not used to seeing such rich black on monitor but it seems bright, crisp, and shiny. Latter may be issue if you live with many light fixtures

Video YES it has Nvidia video card over Intel integrated. This lets for awesome gaming which many other laptops just can not do.

Temperature It does not burn! It still gets warm, particularly on left side near vent but it is not so hot that I have to put something underneath to shield my lap like last laptops I had.

Weight I am kinda skinny man and I can lift this with one hand with no issue. This will be useful as you move around the house or carry in yer bag.

Battery life AWESOME. Just check any other review on this because they will all tell you this thing last a loong time. It was tough to find laptops that can last long WHILE also having great performance AND be under a great. Now there’s.

ExpressGate It lets you to turn on a laptop from off or hibernation mode, into special operating system that has skype, photo, and web browser among others. If you have to google something fast, now you can! there is downside to that in cons section.

Cons

Keyboard This is minor annoyance but I want to be thorough. When you type, on occasion, you hear this light metal ringing ish sound that is coming from metal underneath the keyboard. It is not the quietest keyboard you will use but it will not drive you crazy either.

Touchpad I had to figure out the issue with this because it bugged the hell out of me. It has two and three finger gestures like scroll and right/middle click. Issue was it was not correct and working sporadically. Scroll particularly drived me nuts because it will scroll at own speed/time. I tried pressing my fingers lightly/heavily but difference. Then I figured it out. You must have you motion straight up and down or left/right. When people use the touchpad, we typically have our hand in an angle so we end up scrolling in nearly like \ instead of . Well, touchpad does not like that. Same goes for right/middle click that requires 2 3 fingers. It works best if you have your fingers in same x axis. Many people will not be influenced since they will use mouse but if you will be using touchpad many, be prepared for bit of modification. Oh, and if you like to click the button instead of tapping the touchpad for mouse clicks, exercise your finger because button’s harder to press than other touchpad buttons I have used.

ExpressGate Idea is great. Execution, not quite. I expected instant on like when you come out of sleep mode but unfortunately, there is still many wait involved. 10 ish seconds I believe. As well, Asus installed regular monitor variant of expressgate onto this widescreen laptop so everything’s stretched to fit widescreen. So far, I have not figured out how to change resolution in this mode. It is good for fast browsing but not for long session.

Power cable OMG, where do ASUS think people live in? Castles!? Power cord is the longest I have ever seen. About 10 11 ft total big power block right in the mid point. And though it comes with velcro strip to manage the cable, I found there is too much cable to roll the cable neatly. Just prepare for many mess when packing cable. Good thing this has ten hour battery life so you will not have to deal with cable too much.

All in all, Pros are all vital crucial things and Cons are minor annoyance at best. This is really the best laptop you could get at this price with this much features and performance. I remember coming across Sony and HP that had similarity good speed, light weight, dvd and those goed for 1800ish.. and it did not have 10hr battery life. If you do not believe me, when you go out for laptop shopping, just have the computer’s feature written down and compare. You ain’t gonna find one that beats it easily.

EDIT:

Couple things I came across after prolonged use.

1. It does get hot, particularly near vent but only when I am using it intensely like 3d games. But it does not get hot on the surface much. Just underneath near vent.

2. Changing performance mode requires you to quit any apps that use video card, like Photoshop, games, etc. So change before you load them. Otherwise, when you press the button to change the power mode, nothing happens.

3. OMG FINGERPRINT MAGNET. EVERYWHERE. >.&lt,

This is my 1st review of a product. I was really looking forward to this laptop and when I received it and turned it on I was pretty disappointed. The display on this laptop is poor. The contrast percentage is low, so everything looks a little washed out. Its not awful and could be tolerable but the horizontal looking at angle is horrible! you must get the angle perfect to make the display look satisfactory. If you move it somewhat towards or away from you, it seems discolored and is pretty much unusable. I owned some number of laptops over the last couple years from a 13 dell xps to 18.4 inch hp hdx and I have never had a problem with or complained about a display before. I have never considered examining a display because I am not that picky, but that was the 1st thing and only thing really that stood out through all of my time using the laptop. The only reason I am writing this review is to caution people about the display. If it isn’t that vital to you than this is a great laptop. It is speedy, pretty well made, great battery life, comparatively thin and light, and windows seven rocks. If the display was better it could get five stars. If I had the choice to return this laptop for a full refund I could, only due to display.

NOTE: I have asus eee pc 105ha and it has a much better display than this laptop for contrast and looking at angles.

UPDATE I feel the have to clarify this because I received some comments with info or info about this display. I owned and used many laptops of all brands, price ranges, manufacturers etc. This is a BAD display, it is not just my subjective opinion. Here is a link with real data on the subject= .

This is my 1st Mac computer. My 1st four computers ran Win 3.1, Windows 95, XP, and Vista from about 1995 present. I have quite many of time spent on each of them. Switching from Windows to Mac isn’t hard, but it may be a bit frustrating for a week or so. There are Windows features that you’ll miss, but they’re usually overcome by in general benefits I believe.

I’ve spent two weeks with this machine now. If I had written this review after one day, I could have most likely stated that I regretted the switch to Mac. After to get more proficient with the machine and realizing how well it works, I could certainly recommend it to a friend.

This review is going to be a mix of my impressions of both the hardware and the Mac operating system from a new Mac user perspective.

The only difference between my machine and the one on this product page is that I ordered directly from Apple and upgraded the hard drive to 250GB from the 160GB base option. I’m using 2gb of ram and the lower end processor.

My Mac OS impressions:

The biggest thing I missed from Windows at 1st was the task bar. Mac uses the “dock” to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of like the fast launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the complete bar, with big icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13 years, I missed the capability to see all open programs and switch between them with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon on running programs, but nothing else to separate it from other program and folder icons. The dock isn’t almost as useful for multitasking as the task bar.

The saving grace that rescues the Mac from uncomfortable app switching while multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by either pressing a key or using a multitouch gesture four finger swipe. Expose uses the complete screen to display all open windows and let you to switch between them. It is like alt+tab on steroids. Having used the machine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windows machine. As much as I hated the dock at 1st, I have to give the advantage to the Mac for managing many windows while multitasking.

The controls for open windows are quite different than in MS Windows. In Mac, there’s a resize, hide, and minimize button instead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To shut an app on the mac you have to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Mac resize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it is a bit more uncomfortable. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window for ideal looking at without using the complete screen. I find myself resizing windows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine. I really miss the capability to maximize, if for no other reason but to avoid distractions. The green resize button can be better on an huge monitor, but not on a 13″ notebook. When you minimize or hide an app on the Mac, it’s only available from the dock and is hidden from expose. I will give the window size management advantage to Windows in this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical I believe. It is not a deal breaker, but I do miss the Windows “window controls.” If you’re a recurrent user of the F11 key while web browsing in Windows you will have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefox nor Safari will go full screen.

Windows Explorer is “replaced” with an app called Finder. Finder is kind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up into one. Compared with older variants of Windows, finder is adequate but Vista’s explorer is a pretty bit easier and more logical to use. I favor Vista’s preview pane to Mac’s coverflow. I miss the “up folder” button. I have found myself usually using the view that puts files, folders and apps into a column view for simplest computer browsing, and it just is not as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximize button caused frustration particularly in the finder, because the finder likes to stay in a small window unless you drag the corners.

The Safari web browser is nice and fast and has a decent security repute. I have been switching back and forth between Safari and Firefox. Firefox crashed a couple of times and I really like being able to use multitouch gestures with Safari, so I am leaning toward making Safari my major web tool. Reading RSS feeds, and the bookmark toolbar are really well done in Safari. Browsers are so personal that it is hard to recommend one over the other, but as a Firefox user in Windows I think I have high standard and Safari has met or exceeded them.

I totally hate the iPhoto app. Iphoto doesn’t let you to manage and browse your photos in folders. It imports your pictures and kinds them itself depending on time/date stamps on the photos. This works good for personal vacation snapshots but it totally mixed up the rest of my pictures. Folders that were neatly organized for work projects, and fun web clippings, and adult stuff were all shuffled into one big mess after I imported my image collection. I ended up just deleting all of them and not using iphoto at all. Now I am just using Finder to browse my photos and the preview app to view them. Light editing work is not possible in the preview app and I still have not decided what to use for a basic photo editor still. Vista’s photo app is junk but it is still superior to iPhoto if you like to keep your photos organized using your folder system. I know people who love iphoto. It comes down to if you want the capability to manage your collection yourself. If you have a big mess of photos, you will love iphoto’s capability to manage them via event and face recognition.

Edited to add: you may be able to manage your photos into “albums” after you import them into iPhoto, but be prepared to use up many of time reorganizing everything. After you manage into albums, the major library screen gives you views of your complete collection perhaps things you do not want everyone to see.

I haven’t used Garage Band or iMovie still. I will update afterward when I get a chance.

Edited to add: I played with garage band a bit and it is pretty powerful. It lets you to import and export AAC and MP3 tracks and record sound in many tracks. Easy to use. The only other audio app I have ever used is audacity and I much favor Garage Band. I have not used any of the music lessons it offers still but plan to soon.

I played with iMovie for some minutes and it looks pretty nice and intuitive. I really do not mind Windows Movie Maker, which is included with Vista. I could not think about it a big step up from Win Movie Maker, but it is a nice app.

The mail, calendar, and address book apps are basic but work very well. The address app will import common file types easily. It’ll sync with out of the box. Address book will only sync with Google contacts if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Everyone has an opinion about iTunes. I am a big fan of it. It is exactly like the windows variant only it runs a bit faster without the bugs. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, the Windows iTunes bug with time/date being wrong after the computer sleeps isn’t an issue on the Mac.

Time machine is the Mac’s backup app. It’s amazing and simple. I am using an external drive plugged into my Apple Airport wireless router, as a backup disk. My wireless disk showed up on my desktop instantly once I plugged it into the router. Time machine noticed the external drive now and went to work backing up my files after asking permission of course. Now my machine automatically backs up any changes every hour as long as I am in range of my wireless access point. Time machine is a big load off my mind. If I ever have a drive failure or my computer is destroyed I have an exact backup of everything without remembering to backup my files. Vista will backup as indicated by a set schedule, but it lacks the capability to easily look through backups for particular files. Time machine is great and make wireless backup effortless.

The Mac disk utility is nearly as good as the one in Vista and it is easier to use. It is far superior to the one in XP. I used it to format my external wireless drive because the Mac router could not read NTFS formating although the computer can read NTFS drives via USB for many reason.

The graphics control software is a delight to use. When I plug in my external monitor it now extends my desktop to the new monitor. Adjusting everything from resolution to rotation could not be any easier.

Boot camp is a utility that lets you to create a partition and install Windows as a secondary boot system you have to own or purchase a legal single disk 32bit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. When you start up the boot camp utility, it gives you a choice between using either five or 32 GB of space for the Windows partition. I learned the hard way that Windows XP SP3 will not fit into 5GB. You have to give it at least the 32 GB which left me with nearly exactly 200GB on my “250″ GB drive. Installing Windows using the Boot Camp utility is very easy. Once you get Windows loaded, your OSX install disk makes fast work of installing drivers for your laptop’s hardware. It is too bad that Nvidia and HP are not as good at putting together easy Windows driver packages as Apple. To boot into Windows, you simply press the “option” key throughout bootup and it lets you to decide which OS to run. Windows XP totally screams on this hardware.

Well I must say I’m happy i didn’t purchase apple’s 1st iteration of the 13″ aluminum macbook last year b/c they really got it right the second time around upgrading it to a macbook pro! I just got my brand new 13.3″ Macbook Pro in the mail. I customized mine with 4GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive, but with the entry level 2.26 GHz Intel processor. I unboxed it in front of my mother and sister, and they were both oohing and aahing about how beautiful and thin it was. They also loved the magnetic connector on the end of the power adapter that snaps the power cord into the computer almost by itself. I powered the computer up, went through the Leopard setup screens, and inside minutes has been logged in. While starting up, the light sensor powered on, the screen dimmed, and the keyboard lit up automatically. Everything about this computer suggests ingenious design and engineering, with great attention to every detail. It’s light, and since I’m using this for school, I’m happy with the size and form factor, especially the charger. Switching from a big Dell that sported a charger that may be used to bludgeon somebody to death, the small white charger that’s about the size of a wallet is a breath of new air. This laptop will be a pleasure to travel with.

Are there things this computer lacks? Yes, there’s no Blu Ray player, which could have been nice, but for me wasn’t a deal breaker. I suspect that the next gen MBP’s will phase out the rotating hard drives and switch to hard state as the standard, and will all have Blu Ray players. Till that time, this little laptop is more than enough.

If I had to create a gripe about this computer, there’s really only one and this is true for most of Apple’s products the iPod, iPhone, and MBP’s I wish that they could not coat movable merchandise with textures that are so easy to scratch. It’s obvious that after some months of toting this to class, it’s going to have many scuffs on it. It looks like some a paradox that a company that puts so much value on aesthetics looks only to care about how the product looks when it’s taken out of the original packaging. That said, this laptop feels very tough, and separately from normal wear and tear marks, I’m not fearful that it’ll fall separately, which is a whole lot more than I can say for my last part of crap plastic Dell.

In reading other reviews, people seem to be unable to understand that this qualifies as an ultra portable laptop. It’s simply not going to have a peripheral hookup for each kind of flash card and five USB hookups. Are people serious with lambasting Apple for merging the audio jack in/out ports into one single port? Really, who gives a rat’s a$$? This is a movable computer, not a media center. If you’re a user who favors those things, then you’re free to go out and buy the needed adapters, but I could rather have a lightweight computer that I can tote around. If you want a laptop that’s prepared for any occasion, go purchase an eight lb. Dell desktop substitute, and have fun. I for one think people just want a reason to moan or find something to complain about. The fact is that for the money, you aren’t going to find a better laptop than this one. It costs a bit more than competing PC merchandise, but I owned Dell’s and HP’s, and I can tell you, you get what you pay for. If you use your laptop for at least a couple of hours a day, I think it’s worth a couple hundred extra to get a really high quality product that makes you happy, and that’s why I upgraded to the MBP.

Just received my Asus UL30A X5 yesterday. After much review, and a try out with an Acer 1410, I decided that I wanted a full sized chiclet/island keyboard and the bigger screen. I am already quite happy with my choice. At the &lt,$700 price point, this is an excellent notebook.

Pros

Keyboard. A pleasure to type on.

Touchpad. It drags at 1st, but once you get many finger oil on it, and change the pointer speed, it is one of the best that I have used. Smooth two finger scroller. Support for customized two and three finger click.

Screen. Bright and easy to read at 30 degree angles.

Battery life. Yes, it’ll do over ten hours.

Weight/size. One inch thin and light.

Body. Love the brushed black metal look on the case.

Asus facial recognition login. Did not think that I could care, but it is nice to have the computer log in, without touch, when I am sitting in front of it.

Asus FastBoot not the BIOS fast boot. This allows you to configure which programs load throughout startup and which load after. Speeds up the boot a pretty bit.

Decent speakers. Not ear destroying, but suited for the size. Much better than most netbooks.

Cons

Placement of touchpad. It still registers my palm as I am typing at the extreme setting. Downloaded the new touchpad driver, but that did not fix. Still looking for a solution. This is by far the most frustrating problem. UPDATE: The TouchFreeze utility looks to nearly fix the issue.

Case still shows fingerprints.

Web cam is low res and has difficulty in low light haven’t tried different drivers yet.

I newly bought the Asus UL30A X5 through and am happy with my choice. Let me 1st begin by shortly explaining what I looked for in a new laptop, as I believe that will give the reader better info when deciding if this laptop is right for them. I’m now a student on a budget and looked for the following: 1 Less than $700 in price, 2 Screen size between 13 14″, 3 Windows seven already installed I did not want an older computer with Vista that I could have to manually upgrade to Win seven myself, 4 At least 320GB HD, three GB DDR3 RAM, and a Pentium Core two Duo SU7300 equivalent or greater processor, 5 Thin and light, and 6 4+ hard hours of battery life. Though a netbook offers a small size and easy portability, I did not want to sacrifice power and performance for everyday tasks. On the other hand, I also did not want a big “desktop replacement” laptop that could be a annoyance to carry around or hard to take with me anytime I was away from home. In summary, I wanted a laptop that offered a good mix of power, performance, and size for my money. With that being said, here is my impression far after two days of using this computer:

Pros:

Performance: Able to smoothly and proficiently handle everything I wanted to do to this point. It’s faster than my three year old 15.6″ Dell Inspiron that I first paid $1300 for at the time.

Size and Weight: could not be happier with the sleek look and light weight. It seems better in person than in the pictures.

Quality: many people may think you’re sacrificing quality for a laptop with the specifications for under $700. I think this computer is built well, and could argue it stands up to the much costly or name brand models in the same class.

Warranty: The accidental protection warranty offers another part of mind, which is something not frequently included without an extra cost in other laptops.

Keyboard: easy to use, great design!

Mousepad: I love the textured touchpad on this model. It’s hard to see in the pictures, but the touchpad is really not a conventional “pad”, but a bunch of tiny dots that track the motion of your finger. As well, I really like the extra features like being able to scroll up or down a page by using two fingers anywhere on the pad.

Cons:

The only thing that I’m not too excited about is the small or “smaller” when in comparison to my bigger laptop mouse buttons below the touchpad. This may be something that just takes a little to get used to, but it’s more hard to click the buttons than on my older laptop. Again, this is my 1st 13.3″ laptop so it most likely just comes with the nature of a smaller laptop and I’ll get used to it with time, but it is just something I wanted to point out if you’re transitioning from a big laptop to a smaller one.

Overall, I could not be happier with my buy. Sure, there are better laptops on the market as many will argue, but only if you’re wanting to use up $1000+. This computer certainly earns “5 stars” and I think anybody who is looking for an cheap, ultra portable laptop with powerful performance will be happy also.

I really love this computer in spite of the facts that it has many issues. I really like the finish, it is thin, less than one inch, but by no means is thinner than the macbook air. The casing is sexy, it seems nice from all angles. The keyboard is amazing, the only problem is that it has a little flex but its not the end of the world I can type pretty well. The most annoying thing may be the touchpad, whenever you type and you have your hands located close to it, the touchpad may register many click while you type. Many of people are talking about the battery life of this computer that it will not reach ten hours, I can confirm I get 11+ hours on this lappie, Windows seven is more energy economical than Vista note: I tested under wireless off, lowest screen light, power saving mode, word 2007. I really enjoy the price point its less than $700, which is the ideal price for the performance.

Stylish, sexy looking.

Keyboard feels amazing.

Multi touch track pad works well

Fast in comparison to a netbook C2D, 4GB DDR3

Battery life 11+ hours

Smart Logon, nice cool feature

I bought model DV6 1354US with 500gb hard drive and six cell battery. I use this laptop for editing photos with Adobe Photoshop CS4, also as editing audio with Adobe Audition 2.0.

I have a five year old HP laptop running XP and it’s still going strong. In spite of outsourced Indian phone support, I was able to communicate support issues effectively. I’m confident in future hardware performance and support from HP.

Transition from XP to Windows seven was intuitive. The new taskbar is my favorite improvement. Followed by much better graphic interface and widgets. Many of my XP software causes Windows seven to turn off Aero mode. I feel that windows has caught up with Apple by graphics and workflow.

As far as laptop is worried, Dave from Portland has a great review comparing the different models available on Amazon. The DV6 1354US is enough for me to use Adobe Photoshop and Audition, also as multitask.

I will never go to a laptop again without a numeric keypad, this was an unexpected plus. I do miss the old HP media controls above the keyboard. They’re replaced now by a volume and wireless control. I like that they’re not buttons but touch sensitive surfaces above the keyboard.

The DV6 is quieter and cooler than my old HP. The power cord is beefier, which was generally a problem with my old HP. Though I could favor a magnetic power cord like Apple offers. In comparison to other manufacturers, I could have to say that HP has the best price for great, dependable hardware.

Everything is a great improvement except for the sound. Usually, friends could ask where the music comed from when I used my old DV1000. I felt that the sound was rich for such a small system. I find the DV6 to have a much shallower, smaller sound that finds trouble filling a bedroom. For this reason, I drop the DV6 to four stars.

Also, the DV6 does not come with recuperation disks. You need three DVD+R or R not RW disks to create your.

Overall, I really enjoy this computer, and most likely will continue to take pleasure in it for another five to seven years till RAM is in petabytes and laptops cook dinners. If I had to do it again I could still decide it over an Acer, Asus, Dell, Mac, or Sony.

Interestingly enough, the laptop itself looks to match my reasons. We needed an upgrade and found the features on this to be what we wanted. We experienced many real surprises with windows seven though. It looks many hardware and software aren’t supported by windows seven still. The first surprise was when I tried to load my Kodak software.

It loaded but failed to run. Also it totally blew away access to my drive E:. No matter what I tried, nothing worked. Well after some number of frustrating hours I somehow doubt if I could ever recreate corrupted my newly loaded MS Office 2007. No matter what program I tried to load, Word came up. Windows explorer! totally frustated I made the call.To India. The support was great, of course I had to re set everything to factory settings thus losing anything I added. But it was up and running again.

Took awhile but I was able to load my MS Office again. Then time to do many work, hmmmmmm looks my printer is not supported either,and my iPod most likely is not either.

My suggestion is that before you purchase, check your hardware and software to ensure it’s supported. The laptop itself and the support seem to be good. But then again it is still early.

1st impressions: Big, shiny and deep black except the mirror like touchpad and mouse buttons. Having to get used to the keyboard as the letters are a bit more to the left of the touchpad caused by the numeric key pad. But everything is working well and it is fast!

How can I express how unbelievable this machine is? Well let me attempt. Two weeks earlier I bought the Vista cousin of this machine that had a Pentium and only 1400/900 display blech! and it was a bit sluggish. After I saw an Office Depot flyer marketing this beauty for . With . Rebate, I returned the Pentium to Best purchase, who did not have the machine. This machine is a tremendous value. Big hard drive, four gigs of ram, great keyboard all the HPs have the best engineered keyboards I have seen on any laptops, big and small. And 1600×900 instead of 1400×900 like many of the other models. I agree that the power cable should be on the left side, in fact on the one I returned it was. And yes, the speakers are underwhelming. But this is no “gaming rig”, this is a business desktop substitute, period. Battery life? It says up to four hours by I get between 2.5 and three hours, and with the powersave mode, just a bit over three hours. The lesser cousin did not get 1.5 hours.

Do not pass go, don’t gather . Although you’ll gather . In rebates, just purchase this machine!

This is a great laptop for the money and I could purchase it again.

Pro’s:

Light in comparison to many other laptops LED and LCD screens usually

Screen is bright and easy to read

HDMI lets output to HDTV also for using Media Center on the HDTV

4GB RAM

Good battery life it runned for 3.5+ hours the other day

10 Key number pad

5 1 card reader for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder

Con’s:

Fingerprints are greatly observable on laptop cover glossy black

Keyboard layout is cramped with certain keys arrow keys, delete key

Speakers don’t sound as good as my three year old Toshiba laptop

No physical button for volume control it is software controlled via keyboard/Windows.

I have a Lenovo T61p and the HP is lighter, has better battery life, and a softer keyboard which I prefer the Lenovo/Thinkpad line is too inflexible for me. The Lenovo performs somewhat better in every day tasks faster hard drive & cpu and a just bit faster in graphics intensive applications e.G. Games.

lightweight for such a big screen, lighter than the 15 inch Gateway it’s replacing. Fast, good screen. Have not tested full extent of battery life but its certainly more than three hours. Only two things I do not like. The keyboard is full size, with numbers on right, which means its a little off center. The raised ridges on the “F” and “J” key are slight, barely obvious, so it’s hard to find them without looking. Not sure why HP made them so small on this model, because I looked at other HP laptops and th4ey were much easier to feel. Its a problem now but I assume I’ll get used to it over time. But, I certainly like having the number pad on the right side. The only real negative is the volume on the interior speakers. They’re low I’ve seen alike complaints in other reviews, so I’m confident it isn’t just my machine. I have not tried headphones. Otherwise, it’s a great laptop.

This is my 1st Mac computer. My 1st four computers ran Win 3.1, Windows 95, XP, and Vista from about 1995 present. I have quite many of time spent on each of them. Switching from Windows to Mac isn’t hard, but it may be a bit frustrating for a week or so. There are Windows features that you’ll miss, but they’re usually overcome by in general benefits I believe.

I’ve spent two weeks with this machine now. If I had written this review after one day, I could have most likely stated that I regretted the switch to Mac. After to get more proficient with the machine and realizing how well it works, I could certainly recommend it to a friend.

This review is going to be a mix of my impressions of both the hardware and the Mac operating system from a new Mac user perspective.

The only difference between my machine and the one on this product page is that I ordered directly from Apple and upgraded the hard drive to 250GB from the 160GB base option. I’m using 2gb of ram and the lower end processor.

My Mac OS impressions:

The biggest thing I missed from Windows at 1st was the task bar. Mac uses the “dock” to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of like the fast launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the complete bar, with big icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13 years, I missed the capability to see all open programs and switch between them with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon on running programs, but nothing else to separate it from other program and folder icons. The dock isn’t almost as useful for multitasking as the task bar.

The saving grace that rescues the Mac from uncomfortable app switching while multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by either pressing a key or using a multitouch gesture four finger swipe. Expose uses the complete screen to display all open windows and let you to switch between them. It is like alt+tab on steroids. Having used the machine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windows machine. As much as I hated the dock at 1st, I have to give the advantage to the Mac for managing many windows while multitasking.

The controls for open windows are quite different than in MS Windows. In Mac, there’s a resize, hide, and minimize button instead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To shut an app on the mac you have to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Mac resize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it is a bit more uncomfortable. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window for ideal looking at without using the complete screen. I find myself resizing windows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine. I really miss the capability to maximize, if for no other reason but to avoid distractions. The green resize button can be better on an huge monitor, but not on a 13″ notebook. When you minimize or hide an app on the Mac, it’s only available from the dock and is hidden from expose. I will give the window size management advantage to Windows in this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical I believe. It is not a deal breaker, but I do miss the Windows “window controls.” If you’re a recurrent user of the F11 key while web browsing in Windows you will have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefox nor Safari will go full screen.

Windows Explorer is “replaced” with an app called Finder. Finder is kind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up into one. Compared with older variants of Windows, finder is adequate but Vista’s explorer is a pretty bit easier and more logical to use. I favor Vista’s preview pane to Mac’s coverflow. I miss the “up folder” button. I have found myself usually using the view that puts files, folders and apps into a column view for simplest computer browsing, and it just is not as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximize button caused frustration particularly in the finder, because the finder likes to stay in a small window unless you drag the corners.

The Safari web browser is nice and fast and has a decent security repute. I have been switching back and forth between Safari and Firefox. Firefox crashed a couple of times and I really like being able to use multitouch gestures with Safari, so I am leaning toward making Safari my major web tool. Reading RSS feeds, and the bookmark toolbar are really well done in Safari. Browsers are so personal that it is hard to recommend one over the other, but as a Firefox user in Windows I think I have high standard and Safari has met or exceeded them.

I totally hate the iPhoto app. Iphoto doesn’t let you to manage and browse your photos in folders. It imports your pictures and kinds them itself depending on time/date stamps on the photos. This works good for personal vacation snapshots but it totally mixed up the rest of my pictures. Folders that were neatly organized for work projects, and fun web clippings, and adult stuff were all shuffled into one big mess after I imported my image collection. I ended up just deleting all of them and not using iphoto at all. Now I am just using Finder to browse my photos and the preview app to view them. Light editing work is not possible in the preview app and I still have not decided what to use for a basic photo editor still. Vista’s photo app is junk but it is still superior to iPhoto if you like to keep your photos organized using your folder system. I know people who love iphoto. It comes down to if you want the capability to manage your collection yourself. If you have a big mess of photos, you will love iphoto’s capability to manage them via event and face recognition.

Edited to add: you may be able to manage your photos into “albums” after you import them into iPhoto, but be prepared to use up many of time reorganizing everything. After you manage into albums, the major library screen gives you views of your complete collection perhaps things you do not want everyone to see.

I haven’t used Garage Band or iMovie still. I will update afterward when I get a chance.

Edited to add: I played with garage band a bit and it is pretty powerful. It lets you to import and export AAC and MP3 tracks and record sound in many tracks. Easy to use. The only other audio app I have ever used is audacity and I much favor Garage Band. I have not used any of the music lessons it offers still but plan to soon.

I played with iMovie for some minutes and it looks pretty nice and intuitive. I really do not mind Windows Movie Maker, which is included with Vista. I could not think about it a big step up from Win Movie Maker, but it is a nice app.

The mail, calendar, and address book apps are basic but work very well. The address app will import common file types easily. It’ll sync with out of the box. Address book will only sync with Google contacts if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Everyone has an opinion about iTunes. I am a big fan of it. It is exactly like the windows variant only it runs a bit faster without the bugs. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, the Windows iTunes bug with time/date being wrong after the computer sleeps isn’t an issue on the Mac.

Time machine is the Mac’s backup app. It’s amazing and simple. I am using an external drive plugged into my Apple Airport wireless router, as a backup disk. My wireless disk showed up on my desktop instantly once I plugged it into the router. Time machine noticed the external drive now and went to work backing up my files after asking permission of course. Now my machine automatically backs up any changes every hour as long as I am in range of my wireless access point. Time machine is a big load off my mind. If I ever have a drive failure or my computer is destroyed I have an exact backup of everything without remembering to backup my files. Vista will backup as indicated by a set schedule, but it lacks the capability to easily look through backups for particular files. Time machine is great and make wireless backup effortless.

The Mac disk utility is nearly as good as the one in Vista and it is easier to use. It is far superior to the one in XP. I used it to format my external wireless drive because the Mac router could not read NTFS formating although the computer can read NTFS drives via USB for many reason.

The graphics control software is a delight to use. When I plug in my external monitor it now extends my desktop to the new monitor. Adjusting everything from resolution to rotation could not be any easier.

Boot camp is a utility that lets you to create a partition and install Windows as a secondary boot system you have to own or purchase a legal single disk 32bit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. When you start up the boot camp utility, it gives you a choice between using either five or 32 GB of space for the Windows partition. I learned the hard way that Windows XP SP3 will not fit into 5GB. You have to give it at least the 32 GB which left me with nearly exactly 200GB on my “250″ GB drive. Installing Windows using the Boot Camp utility is very easy. Once you get Windows loaded, your OSX install disk makes fast work of installing drivers for your laptop’s hardware. It is too bad that Nvidia and HP are not as good at putting together easy Windows driver packages as Apple. To boot into Windows, you simply press the “option” key throughout bootup and it lets you to decide which OS to run. Windows XP totally screams on this hardware.

Well I must say I’m happy i didn’t purchase apple’s 1st iteration of the 13″ aluminum macbook last year b/c they really got it right the second time around upgrading it to a macbook pro! Its nice to have that “pro” stamp on a 13″ now! Apple listened to their customers adding nearly everything we asked for and more, and managed to decrease the price! Thanks Apple!

I just got my brand new 13.3″ Macbook Pro in the mail. I customized mine with 4GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive, but with the entry level 2.26 GHz Intel processor. I unboxed it in front of my mother and sister, and they were both oohing and aahing about how beautiful and thin it was. They also loved the magnetic connector on the end of the power adapter that snaps the power cord into the computer almost by itself. I powered the computer up, went through the Leopard setup screens, and inside minutes has been logged in. While starting up, the light sensor powered on, the screen dimmed, and the keyboard lit up automatically. Everything about this computer suggests ingenious design and engineering, with great attention to every detail. It’s light, and since I’m using this for school, I’m happy with the size and form factor, especially the charger. Switching from a big Dell that sported a charger that may be used to bludgeon somebody to death, the small white charger that’s about the size of a wallet is a breath of new air. This laptop will be a pleasure to travel with.

Are there things this computer lacks? Yes, there’s no Blu Ray player, which could have been nice, but for me wasn’t a deal breaker. I suspect that the next gen MBP’s will phase out the rotating hard drives and switch to hard state as the standard, and will all have Blu Ray players. Till that time, this little laptop is more than enough.

If I had to create a gripe about this computer, there’s really only one and this is true for most of Apple’s products the iPod, iPhone, and MBP’s I wish that they could not coat movable merchandise with textures that are so easy to scratch. It’s obvious that after some months of toting this to class, it’s going to have many scuffs on it. It looks like some a paradox that a company that puts so much value on aesthetics looks only to care about how the product looks when it’s taken out of the original packaging. That said, this laptop feels very tough, and separately from normal wear and tear marks, I’m not fearful that it’ll fall separately, which is a whole lot more than I can say for my last part of crap plastic Dell.

In reading other reviews, people seem to be unable to understand that this qualifies as an ultra portable laptop. It’s simply not going to have a peripheral hookup for each kind of flash card and five USB hookups. Are people serious with lambasting Apple for merging the audio jack in/out ports into one single port? Really, who gives a rat’s a$$? This is a movable computer, not a media center. If you’re a user who favors those things, then you’re free to go out and buy the needed adapters, but I could rather have a lightweight computer that I can tote around. If you want a laptop that’s prepared for any occasion, go purchase an eight lb. Dell desktop substitute, and have fun. I for one think people just want a reason to moan or find something to complain about. The fact is that for the money, you aren’t going to find a better laptop than this one. It costs a bit more than competing PC merchandise, but I owned Dell’s and HP’s, and I can tell you, you get what you pay for. If you use your laptop for at least a couple of hours a day, I think it’s worth a couple hundred extra to get a really high quality product that makes you happy, and that’s why I upgraded to the MBP.

I had meant to buy my mother a Macbook for many time now. I wobbled between the some number of models I considered. But, Apple’s late October 2009 update to the white polycarbonate MacBook made the choice much easier.

Reasons for my choice With this update to the 13 inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry notebook remarkable numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core two Duo is the same processor found in the 13 inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro it has 160GB only.

Yes, considering the bigger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook really gives you a higher specification computer in many regards than the $200 costly MacBook Pro 13 inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody gives strength, and I must say this notebook is hard. Also, Apple incorporated a long life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. By performance, my mother stated to me simple handling of almost six hours on a charge. Remarkable. Blows away my older Mac notebook’s battery.

Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro could offer, but my mother could probably not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces carefully as it’ll show light scratches easily.

The bottom of the MacBook is a bit weird. It’s a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I am not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I could recommend wiping off whatever surface you’re going to sit the computer on, to take off light dust, if you worry about the computer’s look.

Overall, I was wanting to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I did not want to agreement performance, and I feel I did not in spite of picking this entry level MacBook. Really, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only somewhat faster. These computers are to get faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.

The price to value of this MacBook is extraordinary. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a bigger hard drive. You can not argue with that. I did not, and the MacBook impressed.

Snow Leopard adds many more than I thought.

This is a great computer if you want to play with pics, surf the web, mess with your music collection.

This isn’t the Mac if you want serious processing power of lots of inputs to create a home network.

Look to a MacBook Pro or iMac for that.

I could have given it five stars if it had more inputs.

This is a pricy computer already, now I have to use up more to get adaptors.

I wish it was still available in black or you could choose the non glaze display.

I hope you enjoy the video, I had fun making it.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I have been through three PC laptops in four years and only one of those did not have deadly hardware failures or viruses. I used Mac’s shortly in 99′ and did not understand them at all and shunned them since. After my last laptops motherboard started failing I decided it was time to take the leap to a Mac. The major reason I did this was because I have heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple merchandise. I waited for the new models to come out 1st before I got one because I have a habit of generally wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I am used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough to get used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I have had it for nearly a two 1/2 weeks now and so far I could not be happier. There are not many faults that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too “sharp” and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher could yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about to get the Macbook pro but couldn’t justify spending more money and to get the same/lower specifications i.E. 160gb hard drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery. I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I do not type in the black so I can do without the backlight keyboard. At this rate I do not see myself going back to PC anytime soon!

I decided it was time to upgrade my laptop and looked for some number of weeks for the right mix of price, hard drive, RAM, Bluetooth, battery, numeric keypad, etc. This laptop has it all. I thought my substitute laptop could be a second Mac since I bought a Mac for my wife six months ago. But with Windows seven to get good reviews and a price one third of the cost of an “equivalent” Mac, my choice was what PC did I want. The DV6 1350 has all the features I looked for as well as the new DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2 and Bluetooth. I also like having the twelve cell battery pack attached. The extra “bump” on the bottom does not annoy me. Ergonomically the keyboard is great. My last laptop was an HP and I’m happy with the dependability. I’m really liking Windows seven in it is functionality. It starts up nearly instantly from sleep mode. This is great laptop at a great price.

I just ordered this yesterday and am up and running. Win7 loads with 60 sec unlike my older HP with XP which now takes anywhere from three to five minutes. The twelve cell battery is hard to find in a stock configuration, so that, plue 4GB of DDR3, and a 7200rmp hard drive, for this price is what made me purchase. I’d like a firewire port too but I see lots of USB firewire to USB adapters on Amazon. I setup the WIFI as part of the initial boot up just entered my SSID/code number for my WiFi Lan, then loaded Microsoft Office and Vizio in about ten minutes and let them register online. Keyboard has a nice feel, common of HP laptops, and I will add information to this review after doing many video editing with Pinnacle nine Plus, Ulead and Sony Vegas. I am sure I will want to Upgrade my DDR3 to 8GB so appreciate any suggestions/stats/prices anybody has on that. For now I am happy to the quality and features at this price which was impossible to find at another reliable site or store. Now to figure out that $50 rebate!

Pros:

Price looks to change weekly on Amazon, but if you may be able to get it at the lower price, it’s a good deal.

Design, features, speed are all good.

Windows 7, so far so good.

Battery life good with expanded battery.

Cons:

Extended battery sticks out of the bottom and makes it a bit more bulky.

No firewire port for this model.

Now I’m quite annoyed with for posting that this computer is qualified for a Windows seven upgrade. I contacted Acer and I have been informed this computer isn’t qualified, if that’s a reason for you to purchase this computer, look for another one and be sure it is you can not believe it just because posts it on the item page, seemingly. I have never had any problem with in the past, so I’m surprised by their false marketing.

As for the computer itself, it has had some issues. 1st of all, it can not find the webcam to be able to use it for video making. Second, I turned it on today and got a awful blue screen which my son tells me has to do with factory installed drivers. I’m no computer geek so I really do not know what he’s talking about, maybe people reading this will know what I mean. It also has gone into hibernation and I couldn’t get it out! Being that I do not know many about computers you may be able to take it with a grain of salt, but I can be returning this, I have not decided still.

I am really disappointed because it’s comfy to use, pretty lightweight, and it does not get hot like the old Compaq I have. I bought it to do simple things, like surf the net, word processing, run Cricut Design Studio, and Adobe Photoshop which I do not installed on it yet. It runs Design Studio just good, for all of you Cricut users, the screen is plentiful in size to get a good view of what you are creating.

I bought it when it was $473.00 which I think is a great price, but now I see there may have been a reason for that!!

I bought this laptop for my twelve yr old niece and I was static due to price. The laptop itself is disappointing, it hangs for no obvious reason and just after two weeks, the free virus protection was not able to protect the laptop. I had to purchase a virus protection of my choice now to save the laptop. I could give it three star only due to price.

Rating: Fantastic Laptop
This is my 1st mac, but most likely my 4th or 5th laptop. The build quality of these aluminum macbooks is great. Little flex/bend to the body and no creaks or moans after about a month of use. The small details of the laptop, like the ambient light sensor, which auto changes display light and keyboard backlight, are what make it a delight to use. After becoming accustomed to the trackpad on this computer, I find it bothersome to use any other. Besides being oversized a plus in my book, the range of multi touch inputs used to navigate are comfy and intuitive. Battery life exceeded my expectations. The computer really can last an complete day on one charge. The screen is great also. Blacks are black and whites are white. It is a TN panel, from what I have read, but it is one of the best TN panels I have had the pleasure of using.

As for hardware performance, it is almost on par with my on the job Mac Pro workstation 2×2.8GHz Xeons, 2GB RAM in the most of things I do web design/development. I will chalk that up to the fact that majority programs I require are not CPU intensive or multi threaded. As well, another 2GB of RAM over the Mac Pro most likely helps. The graphics chipset performs better than I projected also. Running Windows XP via bootcamp, I was able to play COD4, L4D, and CS:S all using medium to high settings at native resolution, all the while to get 40+ FPS in each game.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will share the not many minor issues I have had. The 1st is that the enclosure does tend to get HOT when gaming under Windows XP. When I say hot, I mean “why do my fingers feel like they’re burning?” hot. In many respect, this is most likely a good thing. The aluminum body acts like a big heatsink a good way to dissipate heat from the interior parts to decrease the risk of heat damage. Just think about that if you plan on using this as a gaming laptop, you may become uneasy rather quickly.

The other problem surfaced while using the laptop with an external display. Using a minidisplay port to DVI adapter, I was to get snow or sound or ‘dancing’ pixels on my 24in external monitor. The humorous thing is, this was only the case under OS X. In Windows XP, the monitor worked good. Supposedly, Apple knows of the issue and is preparing a driver update to fix the problem. I was able to fix this myself using SwitchResX to create a custom resolution and refresh rate. In my case, lowering the refresh rate to 53Hz did the trick. I know it may sound weird, particularly since I thought LCDs were only meant to operate at 60Hz, but seeing is believing. If you wind up having alike problems, I propose trying SwitchResX or DisplayConfigX to remedy the issue.

All around a great computer a hard buy.

Rating: Switched from Windows: More good than bad. Great hardware
This is my 1st Mac computer. My 1st four computers ran Win 3.1, Windows 95, XP, and Vista from about 1995 present. I have quite many of time spent on each of them. Switching from Windows to Mac isn’t hard, but it may be a bit frustrating for a week or so. There are Windows features that you’ll miss, but they’re usually overcome by in general benefits I believe.

I’ve spent two weeks with this machine now. If I had written this review after one day, I could have most likely stated that I regretted the switch to Mac. After to get more proficient with the machine and realizing how well it works, I could certainly recommend it to a friend.

This review is going to be a mix of my impressions of both the hardware and the Mac operating system from a new Mac user perspective.

The only difference between my machine and the one on this product page is that I ordered directly from Apple and upgraded the hard drive to 250GB from the 160GB base option. I’m using 2gb of ram and the lower end processor.

My Mac OS impressions:

The biggest thing I missed from Windows at 1st was the task bar. Mac uses the “dock” to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of like the fast launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the complete bar, with big icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13 years, I missed the capability to see all open programs and switch between them with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon on running programs, but nothing else to separate it from other program and folder icons. The dock isn’t almost as useful for multitasking as the task bar.

The saving grace that rescues the Mac from uncomfortable app switching while multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by either pressing a key or using a multitouch gesture four finger swipe. Expose uses the complete screen to display all open windows and let you to switch between them. It is like alt+tab on steroids. Having used the machine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windows machine. As much as I hated the dock at 1st, I have to give the advantage to the Mac for managing many windows while multitasking.

The controls for open windows are quite different than in MS Windows. In Mac, there’s a resize, hide, and minimize button instead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To shut an app on the mac you have to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Mac resize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it is a bit more uncomfortable. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window for ideal looking at without using the complete screen. I find myself resizing windows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine. I really miss the capability to maximize, if for no other reason but to avoid distractions. The green resize button can be better on an huge monitor, but not on a 13″ notebook. When you minimize or hide an app on the Mac, it’s only available from the dock and is hidden from expose. I will give the window size management advantage to Windows in this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical I believe. It is not a deal breaker, but I do miss the Windows “window controls.” If you’re a recurrent user of the F11 key while web browsing in Windows you will have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefox nor Safari will go full screen.

Windows Explorer is “replaced” with an app called Finder. Finder is kind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up into one. Compared with older variants of Windows, finder is adequate but Vista’s explorer is a pretty bit easier and more logical to use. I favor Vista’s preview pane to Mac’s coverflow. I miss the “up folder” button. I have found myself usually using the view that puts files, folders and apps into a column view for simplest computer browsing, and it just is not as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximize button caused frustration particularly in the finder, because the finder likes to stay in a small window unless you drag the corners.

The Safari web browser is nice and fast and has a decent security repute. I have been switching back and forth between Safari and Firefox. Firefox crashed a couple of times and I really like being able to use multitouch gestures with Safari, so I am leaning toward making Safari my major web tool. Reading RSS feeds, and the bookmark toolbar are really well done in Safari. Browsers are so personal that it is hard to recommend one over the other, but as a Firefox user in Windows I think I have high standard and Safari has met or exceeded them.

I totally hate the iPhoto app. Iphoto doesn’t let you to manage and browse your photos in folders. It imports your pictures and kinds them itself depending on time/date stamps on the photos. This works good for personal vacation snapshots but it totally mixed up the rest of my pictures. Folders that were neatly organized for work projects, and fun web clippings, and adult stuff were all shuffled into one big mess after I imported my image collection. I ended up just deleting all of them and not using iphoto at all. Now I am just using Finder to browse my photos and the preview app to view them. Light editing work is not possible in the preview app and I still have not decided what to use for a basic photo editor still. Vista’s photo app is junk but it is still superior to iPhoto if you like to keep your photos organized using your folder system. I know people who love iphoto. It comes down to if you want the capability to manage your collection yourself. If you have a big mess of photos, you will love iphoto’s capability to manage them via event and face recognition.

I haven’t used Garage Band or iMovie still. I will update afterward when I get a chance.

The mail, calendar, and address book apps are basic but work very well.

Everyone has an opinion about iTunes. I am a big fan of it. It is exactly like the windows variant only it runs a bit faster without the bugs.

Time machine is the Mac’s backup app. It’s amazing and simple. I am using an external drive plugged into my Apple Airport wireless router, as a backup disk. My wireless disk showed up on my desktop instantly once I plugged it into the router. Time machine noticed the external drive now and went to work backing up my files after asking permission of course. Now my machine automatically backs up any changes every hour as long as I am in range of my wireless access point. Time machine is a big load off my mind. If I ever have a drive failure or my computer is destroyed I have an exact backup of everything without remembering to backup my files. Vista will backup as indicated by a set schedule, but it lacks the capability to easily look through backups for particular files. Time machine is great and make wireless backup effortless.

The Mac disk utility is nearly as good as the one in Vista and it is easier to use. It is far superior to the one in XP. I used it to format my external wireless drive because the Mac router could not read NTFS formating although the computer can read NTFS drives via USB for many reason.

The graphics control software is a delight to use. When I plug in my external monitor it now extends my desktop to the new monitor. Adjusting everything from resolution to rotation could not be any easier.

Boot camp is a utility that lets you to create a partition and install Windows as a secondary boot system you have to own or purchase a legal single disk 32bit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. When you start up the boot camp utility, it gives you a choice between using either five or 32 GB of space for the Windows partition. I learned the hard way that Windows XP SP3 will not fit into 5GB. You have to give it at least the 32 GB which left me with nearly exactly 200GB on my “250″ GB drive. Installing Windows using the Boot Camp utility is very easy. Once you get Windows loaded, your OSX install disk makes fast work of installing drivers for your laptop’s hardware. It is too bad that Nvidia and HP are not as good at putting together easy Windows driver packages as Apple. To boot into Windows, you simply press the “option” key throughout bootup and it lets you to decide which OS to run. Windows XP totally screams on this hardware.

The hardware is where this computer really shines.

The biggest advantage is stability. My last computer buy was a vista machine. To say that I had stability and hardware compatibility issues with my HP Vista desktop is an understatement. The major reason I turned to mac for this buy was the fact that the hardware, drivers, and software are made for each other. This machine has ran flawlessly for the past two weeks. I did have two crashes of the Firefox browser while watching Flash video, but only the browser went down rather than the complete system.

I connected an external monitor, camera, ipod, USB drive, and router to this machine. All of the drivers were already installed and everything has “just worked.” The hardware is a delight to use if it just works. It’s hard to put into words how happy I’m with the lack of effort in using this machine.

The speed is not blazing fast but it runs well, with many many apps and windows running. My Vista desktop has alike specifications, but my new Mac feels somewhat faster.

One remaining productivity feature of this machine is the touch pad. I honestly favor it to using a mouse for office and browsing tasks. I can not say enough good things about the multitouch gestures. Two finger scrolling, two finger right click, three finger forward and back in Safari, and four finger expose make this machine feel like like it’s part of you. Having the complete surface of the touchpad as the button is smart, particularly for drag and drop functionings. The big size of the touchpad makes it exact.

The keyboard is really nice. At 1st I thought the keys were a bit soft and the travel was too shallow, but I quickly got used to it and now favor it to my more “clicky” desktop keyboard. I do not know how I lived this long without a backlit keyboard. The backlight is far more useful than you most likely think it’s.

The display is beautiful. It has a large looking at angle and is plenty bright for any environment. I could favor that the screen was not glass, but the reflections are not as bad as I feared.

The DVD drive is a DVD drive. It feels slow and makes many of sound. I have never owned an optical drive that I considered fast and calm, and this one is not any exemption. It works well, but is not anything special.

The battery life is unbelievable. I have never ran it past about 40 but the seven hour battery life isn’t an exaggeration if you’re using the computer for light browsing and office apps. Expect about 4 5 hours if you are using it to stream lots of video and heavy web browsing. Listening to music with the display off could easily last over the advertised seven hours.

The size and weight are ideal for portability. 4.5lbs does not exactly feel light till you compare it to likewise spec’d machines that weigh a full pound 20 more. I would not want a much bigger machine if I had to lug it around much.

The speakers are quite good for a small light machine. The sound is clear and the speakers are plenty deafening enough to listen to podcasts or music in a semi quiet medium sized room or office. I will not have to pack external speakers for use in my hotel room when I travel, like my last laptop.

The “magsafe” power adapter is more than just a gimmick, and more than just a way to avoid tripping and breaking your machine. The “power brick” itself is many smaller than my last dell laptop. It is exactly the same size as the USB wall adapters that used to be included with ipods. The cord is 6ft long and the brick will include fold out wings to wrap the cord around. It’s well thought out for travel. With the cord wrapped up and the plug folded into the body, the power brick only takes up about 2.5″ x 3″ x 1″ in your bag. When you’re using it at home or at the office there’s an included 6ft extension cord for the power brick so you are not as tethered to your desk.

The computer runs cool in comparison to most laptops. As well, there aren’t vents where super heated air blows out. While I am sure it uses a fan, I have never audibly really heard it run or felt a stream of warm air from it. I think it may vent through ports and the keyboard but it runs cool enough that you do not notice it.

The only disadvantage to the hardware in comparison to Windows machines is the fact that there’s no choice to hibernate when closing the cover. It sleeps when you close the cover but it still is using a small total of power. If you are only going to be away for a couple hours this is not an issue, but you have to totally shut down when on battery power if you are going to be away much longer.

This machine is many costly than likewise spec’d Windows machines but I feel that it is worth the money. I am a pleased Mac switcher.

Rating: Not sure why all of the haters keep griping about Compact Flash.
I just got my brand new 13.3″ Macbook Pro in the mail. I customized mine with 4GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive, but with the entry level 2.26 GHz Intel processor. I unboxed it in front of my mother and sister, and they were both oohing and aahing about how beautiful and thin it was. They also loved the magnetic connector on the end of the power adapter that snaps the power cord into the computer almost by itself. I powered the computer up, went through the Leopard setup screens, and inside minutes has been logged in. While starting up, the light sensor powered on, the screen dimmed, and the keyboard lit up automatically. Everything about this computer suggests ingenious design and engineering, with great attention to every detail. It’s light, and since I’m using this for school, I’m happy with the size and form factor, especially the charger. Switching from a big Dell that sported a charger that may be used to bludgeon somebody to death, the small white charger that’s about the size of a wallet is a breath of new air. This laptop will be a pleasure to travel with.

Are there things this computer lacks? Yes, there’s no Blu Ray player, which could have been nice, but for me wasn’t a deal breaker. I suspect that the next gen MBP’s will phase out the rotating hard drives and switch to hard state as the standard, and will all have Blu Ray players. Till that time, this little laptop is more than enough.

If I had to create a gripe about this computer, there’s really only one and this is true for most of Apple’s products the iPod, iPhone, and MBP’s I wish that they could not coat movable merchandise with textures that are so easy to scratch. It’s obvious that after some months of toting this to class, it’s going to have many scuffs on it. It looks like some a paradox that a company that puts so much value on aesthetics looks only to care about how the product looks when it’s taken out of the original packaging. That said, this laptop feels very tough, and separately from normal wear and tear marks, I’m not fearful that it’ll fall separately, which is a whole lot more than I can say for my last part of crap plastic Dell.

In reading other reviews, people seem to be unable to understand that this qualifies as an ultra portable laptop. It’s simply not going to have a peripheral hookup for each kind of flash card and five USB hookups. Are people serious with lambasting Apple for merging the audio jack in/out ports into one single port? Really, who gives a rat’s a$$? This is a movable computer, not a media center. If you’re a user who favors those things, then you’re free to go out and buy the needed adapters, but I could rather have a lightweight computer that I can tote around. If you want a laptop that’s prepared for any occasion, go purchase an eight lb. Dell desktop substitute, and have fun. I for one think people just want a reason to moan or find something to complain about. The fact is that for the money, you aren’t going to find a better laptop than this one. It costs a bit more than competing PC merchandise, but I owned Dell’s and HP’s, and I can tell you, you get what you pay for. If you use your laptop for at least a couple of hours a day, I think it’s worth a couple hundred extra to get a really high quality product that makes you happy, and that’s why I upgraded to the MBP.

So we newly received our new MacBook Pro 13.3″ laptop. It’s a big upgrade over our older white iBook. I bought the laptop from Apple.Com and received it inside two days with free shipping. The laptop was up and running in less than an hour, with all our data brought over inside some hours. We couldn’t be happier with it. The speed is great, the display is bright and crisp, the backlit keyboard is a nice touch and the in general design is simply stated: beautiful. If you’re in the market for a new laptop or unsure if a Mac is the right fit for you, I certainly recommend this new offering.

Overall, I’m not dissatisfied, rather just a little disappointed. I had high expectations for this model and the real product did not meet them. As well, the firewire port is , not 400. This is great from the standpoint of speed, but also means you will have to purchase another cable to connect with your present firewire devices.
